Tournament Rules and Information

Everything competitors and families need to know for a smooth, safe, and fun event.

Registration

All competitors must register before the posted deadline. No late entries or add-ons will be accepted. Register for the division you will fall into on the day of the tournament (i.e., your age on tournament day)

Important Information
  • Directors may merge divisions by age, rank, competitor count, and relative weight/size for safety and flow.
  • Unsportsmanlike conduct may result in disqualification or ejection.
  • Referees must be shown maximum respect; decisions are final.

Code of Conduct & Spectator Guidelines
  • FUN is our main goal! Encourage and motivate all competitors.
  • No derogatory comments toward opponents or judges.
  • Questions? Bring them respectfully to the check-in desk.
  • Only judges/competitors on the competition floor.
  • Safety: No small children/babies in the competition area.
  • Cameras/video welcome along the sides unless disruptive.

🥋 Uniform
  • Open Hand & Weapons: Full uniform (top & bottom) in good repair with appropriate belt.
  • Grappling & Jumping: Uniform or school t-shirt and shorts allowed.
  • Hair: Long hair must be tightly secured at the start of each match.
  • BJJ Gis: Sleeves and pants must reach wrists and ankles.
⏱️ Competitor Responsibilities

Know the rules and be on time. Competitors must be properly attired and in the correct ring when competition begins. If you are not present and ready when your division starts, you may not be able to compete.

🏆 Awards & Tournament Champion

Awards

  • Jumping/Kicking: Ribbons for 1st–4th.
  • Forms, Weapons, Breaking, Sparring, Grappling: Medals for 1st–3rd.
  • Overall: Tournament Champion Trophies for 1st & 2nd.

Tournament Champion — Scoring

  • Participation: +0.25 pts/division (max 5 counted).
  • Placings: 1st = +3, 2nd = +2, 3rd = +1 (for best single similar division).
  • Ties: Most divisions entered → then total points.
High / Long Jump
  • One attempt per height/distance.
  • Only feet may touch the ground on landing.
  • If the bar is hit but doesn’t fall, the attempt is valid.
Speed Kicking
  • Ages 8+: Round, Jump Front, Tornado — target at chin height.
  • Ages 7 & under: Round, Jump Front — target at chin height.
  • Timing: 15 seconds per kick type with ~3 seconds between kick types.
  • Kicks must touch the target to count. Total kicks = winner.
  • Ties (1st–3rd): 20-second redo
Forms — General

Judged using a NASKA-style focus on Balance, Kicks, Intensity, Stances, Focus, Weapon Control.

  • Present to judges with your name and request to begin.
  • Perform a class form or an original form (judged on what is performed).
  • Time limit: 2 minutes.
  • Start-over: Allowed once; –2 points. Other rule breaks: –2 by center judge.
  • Ties: Only 1st–3rd redo.
  • Scoring: Judges rank; 1st=9, 2nd=8 … lowest=5.
Open Hand Forms
  • No music.
  • No >380° aerial spin, no inverted body in air, no both feet over head (butterfly/scorpion ok; no cartwheels).

  • No music.

  • Unintentional drop: may finish with penalty; Black Belts: DQ.
🎵 Creative Forms
  • Any movements permitted (martial arts or otherwise). Open hand or weapons.
  • Music suggested (bring your own player); not required.
  • Unintentional drop: may finish with penalty; Black Belts: DQ.
👥 Team Forms
  • Teams of 2–3 current students; compete in the division of the highest-ranking member.
  • At least 75% must be synchronized movements.
  • Judging emphasizes choreography to music, technique, execution, and synchronization.

Breaking
  • Bring your own boards.
  • 90 seconds to set up and execute.
  • No props (spring boards, chairs, spacers). Humans may be used for jumping over/off only.
  • No board bending by holders.
  • Any number of boards allowed. Max 3 breaks (Black Belts: max 5).
  • Judging: set up, difficulty, execution.
🤸 Tricking
  • Judged on Creativity, Presentation, Transitions, and Difficulty.
  • No music; no objects.
  • Minimum of 5 moves. One start-over allowed with deduction.
🥊 Sparring — Gear

All competitors must wear approved safety gear in good repair:

  • Headgear, kickboxing gloves, shin/instep pads, mouthpiece.
  • Groin cups optional.
  • Face shield required if needed for glasses/braces or recommended for Continuous Sparring.
🎯 Point Sparring

Length of Match

  • Ages 9 & under (Beg/Int/Adv): 90s or first to 5.
  • Ages 10+ (Beg/Int/Adv): 120s or first to 5.
  • Black Belt: 120s or 5-point spread; BB must win by 2.
  • Ties: Sudden victory (first point).

Scoring and Targets

  • Hand: 1 pt. Kick: 2 pts. Penalties: ±1 pt.
  • Legal: head, ribs, chest, abdomen, sides.
  • Illegal: back, spine, back of neck, throat, sides of neck, below belt.
Continuous Sparring

Ages 10+ on ly 

  • Duration: 120 seconds nonstop.
  • Judging: Total points, ring control, dominance. Center judge may stop for warnings/safety.
  • Legal targets: head, ribs, chest, abdomen, sides, thighs.
  • Illegal: back, spine, back of neck, throat, sides of neck, groin. No elbows; no knees to head.
🧩 Grappling (IBJJF — Modified)

Hygiene

  • Gi/clothes washed and free of odors. Nails short/clean. Long hair secured.

Disqualification

  • Foul language/disrespect; biting/hair pulling/eye poking/striking; attempts to injure genitalia.
  • Using fists, knees, feet, elbows, or head to hurt/gain unfair advantage.
  • No slamming.

Winning

Order: 1) Submission 2) Points 3) Advantages. If tied at time, restart standing for sudden victory. (i.e. Bob has  2 points vs. John has 3 advantages → Bob wins.

Submission

  • Tap (hand/foot) or verbal; ref/coach/parent may stop to prevent injury; crying out in pain may stop match.

Points (3-second hold)

  • 4: Mount; back w/ hooks. 3: Knee on belly. 2: Takedowns; sweeps; guard passes.

Advantages

  • Near but incomplete: takedown, sweep, pass attempts, legit submission forcing defense.

Penalties

  • 1st: warning → 2nd: opponent +adv → 3rd: opponent +2 points → further: DQ possible.

Examples: Kneeling before grips; fleeing ring; removing/allowing Gi removal to stall; fingers in sleeves/pants; stalling, constantly standing for avoiding or stalling.  

Lenght of Match

  • Light weights (about under 10 years) 3 minutes
  • Middle weight (about above 10 years) 4 minute

Restart The Match

Start standing or kneeling. Near boundary: ref attempts same-position reset; if not possible, restart standing.
